In the past several days, I have had several conversations with people feeling uncertain about resting. We clearly have an internal dialog that busy = desired state of our lives. Physicians have a constant current of tasks, activities and criteria that keep us in a perpetual state of motion.
What if there could be pauses, moments of exhaling.
What if doing nothing was supportive to our sense of well-being, cognition, and creativity? Speaking from n=1, I find it to be very true. Precisely when I think I can’t take a break is when I need to find space to do nothing. EVEN, dare I say, get bored.
AND resting is ok!
Permission granted to rest and DO NOTHING.
physician burnout is a public health crisis and though the system needs dire structural changes, we can’t wait for that period in time. We can work on the elements that we have control over.
Understandably, there are some who are working hard in jobs and lives where busy is the means to keep things afloat. And that is tough, too. Finding brief moments of pause, to exhale can be supportive.
