Transitions are the one constant in Life

Sep 1, 2021

Transitions are the one constant in Life

Transitions are the one constant that no one questions

What is one thing we can count on as a constant? Transitions are the one constant that everyone has learned to embrace.

#transitions

That always felt a little ironic to me.

In the last six months, there have been significant transitions for friends and family around me.

Some have moved, changed jobs or ended relationships. #Death has also happened. Such a final word. When I say it or think it, it can feel so final or heavy. A moment arrives even when it’s hard to breathe.

We said goodbye to a dear uncle last night. The changes with age and frailty creating a passage to something different.

There have been a number of other deaths too – of young people and pets. Shocking and sudden.

I see how Death abstractly shows up other ways too. Leaving a meaningful career, ending a relationship or perhaps even an endpoint in a thought pattern. At times an unwelcome guest however when death arrives in whatever context, I have found it to be a nonnegotiable energy. A transition is coming.

I am reminded what I learned about transitions from my #Ayurvedic training. How each of the small daily habits that we do every day can add up to create our state of being. Literally every act we engage in, impacts how we think, feel and engage with life.

I’m finding it valuable to contemplate on the idea of transitions right now … life will never be the same again.

I tend to resist transitions.

Is that a fault… Perhaps.

I’ve learned that I need to consciously pay attention when a transition is coming. And to signs that show me life is shifting. I love to look to nature for this. When a hawk shows up, I listen. Paying attention like this helps bring awareness to a process I may be resisting.

Perhaps it is even a simple thing like the transition from early morning to work. From summer to fall. Or the transition from anger to relaxation. Or the transition from work to evening and ultimately sleep.

Shifting my awareness to create ease in transitions helps, especially in this time when the life we had is fading into the distance.

Can we embrace what is emerging with patience, hope, and optimism? It will take effort and choice however I believe it can be done. Transitions are the one constant that I have learned to count on.
